Atelier Buffile
Founded in 1945 by Léonie Buffile, who developed a range of tableware inspired by Chinese ceramics. She married Jean Buffile in 1947, who concentrated on creating decorative art objects. Together, they became part of the ‘Aix school’, whose members, including George Jouve, René Ben-Lisa and Jean Amado, have gone down in the history of French ceramics.
In 1984, their son Vincent and his wife Monique took over the business. They continued the workshop’s production tradition, while working on decorative panels for architecture. In the 1990s, the studio welcomed students from the M.I.C.A. university, and it was at this point that the company began working with visual artists.
Vincent’s knowledge and mastery of clay, firing, enamelling and moulding enable him to invent techniques to give shape to the projects of all these artists. Simon Van Der Ven, Gérard Drouillet, Allison Smith, Ken Tisa, Paul Coupille, Louise Bourgoin, Tony Ramos, Jean-Paul Van Lith, Hervé Maury, Louis Molle, Trevor Gould and others all contribute their expertise to this four-handed collaboration.
In the early 2010s, after studying contemporary art, their son Romain joined the family studio, adding his own generational touch. Exhibitions at the Pavillon de Vendôme museum and recently at Galerie Baudoin Lebon and the Sèvres biennial.
