The Contemporary Art section of Moderne Art Fair is the place where today’s creative work takes centre stage. Painting, sculpture, installation, murals: galleries here showcase artists whose work engages with the present day, striking a balance between embracing tradition and breaking with it.

The previous edition welcomed Mathias Kiss as guest of honour. Trained in the restoration of historic monuments with the Compagnons du Devoir before becoming one of the most distinctive figures on the French art scene, he presented a body of work that subverts the conventions of classical ornamentation: crumpled mirrors, frames that seem to escape their confines, painted skies — a body of work that rejects right angles and the academic tradition from which it nevertheless originates. A highlight that set the tone for what this section aims to champion.

This year, the fair continues this theme with artists present on site, engaging with the public. Touils, a self-taught artist born in Oujda, breathes new life into large-scale landscape painting, in a saturated light inherited from the Impressionists and infused with a resolutely contemporary energy. Xavier de Vilmorin creates a colourful, dreamlike world where geometric shapes and suspended figures convey intimacy, blending Cubism, Expressionism and the poetry of memory. Cristina Vergano, based in New York, employs a classical painting technique to bring to life a surreal and whimsical imagination, populated by creatures and references to art history.
