Sisal in its finest form, entirely handmade

GASYRUG is a textile art studio founded in Tamatave, on the east coast of Madagascar. It elevates a millennia-old craft – spiral basketry – to the status of exceptional works of art. This ancient and universal technique, passed down through the generations, is the very same one that adorned the walls and floors of the Queen’s Palace in Antananarivo in the 19th century.

At the heart of every piece, the skill of Malagasy women lies in the precision and excellence of their handiwork. Today, more than sixty craftswomen bring to life unique and exceptional wall hangings and floor rugs.

“A rug two metres in diameter requires 1,200 metres of woven material and two months’ work.”

Through weaving, every woman builds her independence, and with her, an entire community of women and men moves forward.

From this gesture emerges a work imbued with a soul. Indeed, sisal – a living fibre – becomes the medium for an intimate creative reflection on what endures and what connects us. These works, which straddle the line between art and design craftsmanship, are made to last; what they express – the spiral, the movement, the whole – is in perpetual motion.

Every GASYRUG tapestry is an invitation to experience your home in a different way, through pieces imbued with soul and emotion.
